<description>During the summer of 2011, I had the opportunity to take a "visual narrative" workshop with Jessica Helfand of Design Observer. She demonstrated her Ezra Winter project, which involved the collection and documentation of artifacts to construct a visual history of a person's life.

Our task was to purchase one photograph, and create a story for our peers to document and piece together. I chose World War II as my backdrop. One Japanese soldier and one American soldier were stranded on a remote island in the middle of the South Pacific. Instead of fighting, they likely befriended one another knowing it would increase their chances of survival. Based on this, I asked my sister and brother-in-law to write to one another as the American soldier and his wife, as if they were separated during the war. They both really got into it, providing authentic period items including photographs. They wrote letters and a journal, and my sister even cut a lock of hair. I wrote the "story" and set up the framework, art directing just enough to push the project in the direction I needed it to go. All items were placed intentionally in the ammo can to be removed in a specific order. The letters were tucked in a leather pouch at the very bottom–the last and most important piece of the puzzle to tie it all together.

<description>I had the opportunity to take How to Make an Infographic, an online Skillshare class with Liz Meyer and Gavin Potenza of Script &#38; Seal in Brooklyn, NY. The goal was to create a map infographic with hurricane data from 1851-2010, collected from the NOAA . I chose to use a "heat map" to illustrate the states battered most frequently, as well as flags to indicate the precise number of hurricane strikes. The left hand side contains the hard facts to put the rest of the data in context - how hurricanes are categorized (emphasizing the severity) and information the viewer might find interesting, such as how and why they name tropical storms each season

<description>Instead of a simple "links" section with a list of names, I decided to illustrate each of the people I work / conspire / associate with and admire. This has been a great exercise in using minimal elements, forcing me to pick one or more features that will make each recognizable. By clicking on their head(s) when you visit this page, you can go to each of their respective sites so you can check out their work.

This is not an exhaustive list and is an ongoing project.

<description> We Make here in Portland "fosters art and design within our community through hands-on experiences, workshops and design in action initiatives."

When they put out a call for entries for the Put a Bird In It project - with 100% of proceeds donated to Portland Public Schools Art and music education - I couldn't pass up the opportunity to participate.

I enjoyed stepping away from the computer for a bit and creating something with my hands. This birdhouse contained many sustainable and modern features: solar panels on the roof, rain barrel, sun-blocking UV cover over deck, vertical garden and a lifetime allen wrench perch.

Photos by my talented colleague Ethan Allen Smith // See the rest of the birdhouses here

cable (n.)
c.1200, from O.N.Fr., from M.L. capulum "lasso, rope, halter for cattle," from L. capere "to take, seize" (see capable). Technically, in nautical use, a rope 10 or more inches around (smaller ones being hawsers); in non-nautical use, a rope of wire (not hemp or fiber). Given a new range of senses in 19c.: Meaning "message received by telegraphic cable" is from 1883 (short for cable message). Cable car is from 1887. Cable television first attested 1963; shortened form cable is from 1972.
